Classroom Placement

Placement Considerations

The assignment of students to classrooms is a task requiring much careful planning by the school staff. The district-wide procedure used to develop elementary school class lists accommodates both parental input and professional judgment, with the final decision for classroom placement resting with the school.

Using a team approach, the principal and grade level teachers address the following criteria when placing students in instructional groups:

  • Heterogeneous Groups - A mixture of academic abilities, talents, personalities, and gender.
  • Students with Special Needs - Students who are learning disabled, are physically handicapped, or have emotional and/or behavioral considerations will be placed appropriately.
  • Special Information - Identified by the parent/guardian via a special form available in each school office (optional).
  • Organizational Options - Students will be considered for options which may exist in the building such as self-contained and team teaching.

Parents or guardians should use the Special Information Form available in the school office if they feel that there is special information that would be helpful in placing their child. Examples of such information include: learning styles, building organizational plan, the learning environment most beneficial to the child, individual children to consider for placement or separation special health concerns, etc. Completing this form should be considered an optional activity.

A more detailed description of Concord’s student placement process is available upon request in the school office.

Classroom assignments are mailed to the students’ home in late August.

Class Size

Class size guidelines used by the Edina Board of Education are as follows:

Kindergarten: 18 - 21
Grades 1-3: 21 - 24
Grades 4-5: 24 - 27

These are the planning figures used by each principal in determining the number of sections per grade level. Once the class size exceeds the upper limit in all classes at any grade level, we look at adding another section or providing additional paraprofessional help.
