Individual Counseling for Students
I can work with your child on an individual basis regarding many issues such as anxiety, stress, grief, anger management, school refusal and other issues. Your child and I pick goals they work on and we discuss them each week. The goals are chosen with the help of the parents, gaurdians, myself and their teacher. A typical counseling session usually goes like this:
- We meet for ½ hour once a week.
- We talk about the goals they are working on.
- We review what we talked about last week.
- One to two times a month we evaluate how things are going with friends, school, and home. (This is usually done on a scale from 1-5. For example, if the student circles a 3, everything is going o.k.) We then set a goal to try and get the number to a 4 or 5.
- Three times a year I do a self-esteem/self-concept questionnaire. It has seven questions on it.
- We talk about things they like and don't like and build on strengths.
- We discuss any issues they have.
- I build on self-esteem and self-confidence through positive reinforcement.
- At the end, we play a game.
I am available to meet with you or call or e-mail if you have questions.
