Trait 2--Ideas and Content
![]()
I think I have an idea for my paper. How do I know if it's a good one?
You are worried about the main point of your writing and with good reason. A strong piece of writing must have a sound main idea from which to start. A good idea is clear and detailed. It should convey a fresh, original perspective about the topic rather than information about it that most people already know. Just because writing is organized does not mean it is interesting. Take the time to come up with a concept that is unique in order to capture your readers. After the topic is made clear, examples and intriguing details are used to support the main idea and help the reader understand the topic. Any time you use a paraphrase or quote as an example, it should be followed by your explanation of why it is important. Examples and explanations always stay focused and do not stray from the main point.
How can you be sure you have a good idea?
