Sophomore Planning Calendar

It is a great thing to run off and put on your refrigerator so that you don’t miss anything.

National College Fair

The National College Fair will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday October 5. (Tuesday, October 4 9:00a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Wednesday October 5 9:00a.m.-12:00p.m.) Students are encouraged to attend as it is an excellent opportunity to visit with representatives from over 200 colleges and universities. The ideal situation is for the student to attend with their parents during the evening session. For additional information (a list of schools attending, directions, and scheduled seminars, visit the NACAC web site: www.nacacnet.org

PLAN

The PLAN test will be given to all 10th graders on October 6, 2011 from 8:30 a.m.-noon (Juniors and seniors will have a late start).   (What is the PLAN test?  Basically, it is a practice ACT.  Why take it?  In addition to a prediction of how the student will do on his ACT, students also receive career/future planning information based on their responses to a mini-interest inventory. Check it out on the web page under “Testing.” which is in the College Resources section of the web page.  The PLAN is a Pre-ACT test, administered to all sophomores in October (no registration necessary). The PLAN provides practice for the ACT, which students will take in their junior year. In addition to predicted results for the actual ACT, students will receive career/future planning information based on their responses to an interest inventory. Scores are distributed to students shortly after Winter Break.

PSAT

The PSAT test will be given on October 12, 2011 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. Registration takes place at Edina High School. Students must register to take the test. The PSAT is a practice SAT and is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. See PSAT for more information about the test, registration information and who should take it.

The PSAT is an optional test offered primarily for juniors.  Traditionally, about 35% of the Edina sophomores take the PSAT. The majority of those who take it are in the upper third of their class.

The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test™. It also gives you a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

  • critical reading skills
  • math problem-solving skills
  • writing skills

You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.

The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are:

  • to receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
  • to see how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
  • to enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation ( only for grade 11).
  • to help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
  • to receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

Athletes--NCAA Requirements

Underclassman and their parents may wish to visit the NCAA web site in order to be aware of the requirements changes that could affect future college athletes. Click on "Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete." There is a pamphlet and a short book that are must reads for students (and their parents) who are hoping to play a college sport.
