EHS Administration Team

For school year 2010-11, Dr. Bruce Locklear returns in his role as Principal, along with Assistant Principals Jenny Johnson, Eric Nelson, and John Soma. Heidi Howard and Michael Pretasky will split the Dean of Students responsibilities, with each providing additional leadership to other programs.

  • Dr. Bruce Locklear enters his fourth year as principal of Edina High School. Dr. Locklear served as principal of Delano HS prior to coming to Edina. He began his career in 1985 as a classroom teacher and he also served as a football, track, and head women's basketball coach during his tenure in the classroom. His formal training includes earning a B.A. degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC in anthropology, sociology, and secondary education, an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from St. Mary’s University. Dr. Locklear is also a graduate of the Bush leadership program with the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, and served on a high school reform group of secondary administrators through Harvard University.
  • Mr. Eric Nelson, Assistant Principal and Director of Fine Arts, Speech and Debate, has been at EHS since 2002. Prior to serving as an assistant principal at EHS, Mr. Nelson served as our dean of students. He earned his B.A. in History and his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Minnesota, and his Ed.S. in Educational Administration from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to EHS, Mr. Nelson was a Social Studies Teacher and Area Leader at Henry Sibley HS from 1995-2002.
  • Ms. Jenny Johnson, Assistant Principal, has served EHS in a number of positions, including: activities director, dean of students, coach, and mathematics teacher. She earned her B.A. at the University of Illinois in Speech Communications. Her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction and her Ed.S. in School Administration were earned at the University of St. Thomas.
  • Mr. John Soma, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, has been at EHS since 2009. He earned his B.A. in Math at St. John’s University. His M.Ed. in Education Leadership and his Ed.S. were both granted by the University of St. Thomas. Prior to coming to EHS, Mr. Soma was a math teacher and activities director at Woodbury HS.
  • Ms. Heidi Howard, Dean of Students and Academic Support Coordinator, will also continue to serve as the lead for the STRIVE program. Ms. Howard has been an assistant principal at EHS and a social studies teacher at South View Middle School. She earned her B.A. in Social Work at Bethel College. Her M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction and her Ed.S. in Educational Leadership were earned at the University of St. Thomas.
  • Mr. Michael Pretasky, Dean of Students, will also continue to serve as the lead for the Options program. Mr. Pretasky began his career with Edina Public Schools in 1999 as the World Music teacher at Valley View Middle School, and made the transition to Edina High School in 2007. He completed his B.A. in Music, as well as his M.A. in Education Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota. In 2005, Mr. Pretasky returned to the University and earned graduate certificates in Disability Policy and Services, Professional Development, and his K-12 Principal License.

Edina High School has over 1900 students in grades 10, 11 and 12; of those students, 95% go into higher education.
