Edina KIDS Club students and staff bring home State Fair blue ribbons

August 29, 2012

August means back to school, changing temperatures, and of course, the Minnesota State Fair. KIDS Club Recreation Leader and South View paraprofessional, Betsy Madson, is a veteran when it comes to competing at the State Fair, having entered in the creative activities category for over 20 years and winning 3rd place every single year.

This summer, Madson brought her State Fair enthusiasm and competitive spirit to Countryside and Highlands KIDS Clubs. With Madson’s help, students created fun clay projects, beads and artwork, many featuring the popular Angry Birds game characters. While some students fine-tuned their projects throughout the summer, Madson did end up delivering some late entries to the Fair with the glue still wet.

“It is amazing to see the kids really take pride in what they are doing,” Madson said. “When I brought the projects over to the Fair, people couldn’t believe that 1st and 2nd graders had made these creations.”

The students entered their creations in various art categories including clay, mixed media, pictures, and jewelry. Over half of the 15 entrants earned either first, second, or third place. In addition to their ribbons, winning students will also receive modest monetary prizes (e.g. around $5 each).

If you are headed to the State Fair this weekend, be sure to stop by the Education Building and check out these students’ amazing creations!
