FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Edina High School Students to be recognized for Community Service Edina, Minn., May 10, 2010 – By packing more than 15,000 collective community service hours into their high school careers, a group of 145 charitably minded Edina High School students will be honored at an award ceremony this spring for lettering in community service. On Thursday, May 20, Edina Public Schools (EPS) will host a recognition program for the students at 6 p.m. in the Edina Community Center Auditorium. In order to receive a letter, students must complete 120 hours of community service, receive written recommendations from two participants of service, interview with a Youth Development-Youth Service Manager and complete a reflection project. Nearly any activity that introduces students to the solution of a social problem can be applied towards community service hours. Everything from volunteering at the Humane Society to participating in service-learning projects like Kids Against Hunger, can qualify students for the honor. Many of the students also fulfill their hours by teaching religion classes, going on mission trips and participating in other church-related service projects, said Rachael Pream Grenier, manager of the Youth Serving Youth program. In 1996, EPS began recognizing community service as an activity in which students could letter, in addition to the typical athletic, academic and musical endeavors. That first year three students qualified for the letter, but participation has really exploded from there. “I have the pleasure of hearing about the amazing work they are doing via the lettering opportunity during the interview,” said Pream Grenier. “I find myself feeling wowed; I don’t think students were serving like this when I was in high school. It is awesome!” About Edina Public Schools: ### |
