FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Two Edina High School seniors honored with Edina, Minn., Oct. 8, 2009 – Last month, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) honored 544 high school seniors for outstanding writing skills, and two Edina High School students were among them. Seniors Tom Schmidt and Sharanya Srinivasar were both named winners in the 2009 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing, which recognizes some of the best student writers in the nation. “Edina High School is honored to have two students this year recognized for both their talent and achievement as writers,” said Principal Bruce Locklear. “A special thank you to our teachers for their work with our students as they assist in their academic development, which in this case, led to a wonderful recognition for our school community; an honor we hold high.” 1,783 juniors were nominated for this award and submitted examples of their best prose, verse or impromptu themes written under supervision for review by a team of English teachers. The judges were looking for writing that “demonstrates effective and imaginative use of language to inform and move an audience.” The Achievement Awards in Writing program was established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and publicly recognize excellent student writing. Students are nominated in their junior year by their school and winners are named at the beginning of their senior year. Congratulations to these two excellent writers for earning this prestigious honor and proudly representing Edina Public Schools at the national level.
