FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 17 Edina High School seniors named National Merit Semifinalists Edina, Minn., Sept. 16, 2009 – Edina Public Schools congratulates the 17 seniors who were recently named National Merit Semifinalists. Approximately 16,000 students nationwide completed the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT®) and were recognized as National Merit Semifinalists. More than 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools participated in the 2009 National Merit Program. The following Edina students were named National Merit Semifinalists: Sophia Burke, Robert Fletcher, Max Grossman, Madeline Lamo, Hannah Mirman, Anna Nisi, Andrew Peter, Anna Rodriguez, Samuel Rusk, Jenny Rustad, Thomas Schmidt, Evan Shimizu, Sharanya Srinivasan, Anna Waldo, Silas Wallen-Friedman, Sarah Weiss and Michael Wu. “Being recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist signifies excellence above and beyond the norm,” said Principal Bruce Locklear. “We are proud of our 17 students recognized and are certainly proud of the tradition that continues at our high school.” Locklear also commended the teachers who implement the rigorous curriculum that prepares students for the qualifying test. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) was founded in 1955 as an independent, not-for-profit organization focused on identifying and honoring academically talented U.S. high school students. Since 1955, NMSC has recognized 3 million students and provided more than 335,000 scholarships worth more than $1.3 billion. Semifinalists must achieve Finalist standing in February before potentially becoming one of 8,200 Finalists selected to receive a Merit Scholarship. ® These selections are made and announced in April.
