FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Edina High School principal named Principal of the Year

Edina, Minn., Feb. 5, 2010 – The Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) named Dr. Bruce Locklear, principal of Edina High School (EHS), the 2010 Minnesota High School Principal of the Year.

Locklear was honored with the award at an MASSP conference last week.

Candidates for Principal of the Year are evaluated on three criteria: the ability to focus the school community and achieve goals, improving teaching and learning through implementing programs that encourage student achievement, and providing a positive school environment with high staff and student morale.

Representatives from the MASSP said Locklear was chosen based on his collaborative leadership style which introduced several programs that successfully improved student achievement and his efforts to create a more personable and improved school environment.

“It certainly is an honor,” Locklear said of the award. “It’s humbling, I’m excited and feel good about it, but it’s also a major reflection of all the people who do great work all around the school.”

Implementing innovative programs to reach students in ways they learn best has gone a long way toward allowing EHS to reach its goal to “reach and teach all learners.” Under Locklear’s tenure, the school has introduced several innovative programs, including the STRIVE program, Edina Math, the Mentor Connection, a student leadership development program and a comprehensive College in the Schools program.

The efforts have garnered the interest of national press this last year as Edina High School was ranked among the top 2 percent of high schools across the nation by U.S. News & World Report and ranked 91st overall in the latest Newsweek poll – both of which were tops in Minnesota.

Ric Dressen, superintendent for Edina Public Schools, describes Locklear as a visionary, compassionate and connective leader.

“He is an impact player and is making a difference well beyond Edina’s borders,” Dressen said. “He is the best.”

As the Minnesota High School honoree, Locklear, is a candidate among other state winners for the National High School Principal of the Year, to be introduced at the 2011 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) convention next March in San Francisco.  In addition, Locklear will join other state honorees at the Principals Institute in Washington D.C in October of 2010.

The Minnesota Principal of the Year program is sponsored by MASSP, the preeminent school leadership organization that serves as the voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals and aspiring school leaders.
