Students to take part in World Cultures Day at Creek Valley Elementary School

Edina, Minn., Oct. 19, 2009 – Students at Creek Valley Elementary School will participate in the second bi-annual World Cultures Day on Friday, Oct. 23. The event, which is sponsored by the Global Citizens Fund, will be held from approximately 9:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the school, which is located at 6401 Gleason Rd. in Edina.

Students will participate in an opening and closing ceremony as well as various cultural activities from Swedish dancing to international games to origami. Students will rotate through classrooms to hear speakers from several countries talk about growing up and living in a foreign country. Students are invited to dress in their heritage clothing.

“We hope that students gain an appreciation of global cultures that are different than our own, as well as an awareness of the needs that exist around the world,” said Creek Valley Principal Kari Dahlquist.

The schedule will be as follows:

  • 9:40 – 10:10 a.m. Introductions and performance by Barinya, an African
    drumming group
  • 10:20 – 1:55 p.m. Students rotate through classrooms for activities and speakers
  • 2:10 – 2:30 p.m. Closing assembly, including slide show and violin performance

Students will also participate in fundraisers leading up to World Cultures Day, such as “Pennies for Peace,” which raises money for schools in Afghanistan; “Book and a Buck,” which sends used books to Kenya; and “Ball and a Buck,” which raises money to provide used soccer equipment to girls in India.

The mission of the Creek Valley Global Citizens Fund is to enhance the Edina Public Schools ICCCAR ethical values through global programs with the purpose of inspiring all Creek Valley students to become responsible and caring world citizens.

The event is free and open to the general public. For more information, visit the Creek Valley Parent Teacher Association’s Web site at www.creekvalleypta.com.
