Highlands Elementary School Named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School
by U.S. Department of Education

Edina, Minn., October 6, 2011 – For the second time, Highlands Elementary School has been designated a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, which honors public and private K-12 schools whose students have high achievement rates or have made significant progress in closing the achievement gap. The program is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education effort to set a standard of excellence for schools and share their best practices in school leadership and teaching practices.

To be considered for this award, schools are nominated based on one of two criteria:

1) HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS: Regardless of backgrounds, students at the school are considered high performing based on their performance on state assessments; or

2) IMPROVING SCHOOLS: Schools with at least 40 percent of their students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and improve student performance to high levels as measured by the school's performance on state assessments.

"This is a great honor for the staff, students and parents at Highlands to be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School," says Principal Peter Hodne. "To be regarded as a 'High Performing School' represents a lot of hard work by many people."

Highland was one of eight Minnesota schools to be recognized and is among 313 qualifying K-12 schools nationally that will be celebrated in Washington D.C. on November 14 and 15.

The winners from Minnesota are:
• Atheneum Elementary School - Inver Grove Heights
• Battle Lake Elementary School - Battle Lake
• Brandon Elementary School - Brandon
• Eagle Valley Elementary School - Clarissa
Highlands Elementary School - Edina
• Randolph Elementary School - Randolph
• Viking Elementary School - Viking
• West Central Area South Elementary School - Kensington
