Edina High School’s Advanced Placement program sets the bar for Minnesota

Edina, Minn., Feb. 20, 2009 – Edina High School (EHS) is the only school in Minnesota to receive the 2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. The award celebrates exceptional Advanced Placement (AP) programs and is only granted to one high school per state. As part of the award, the high school will receive a $1,000 grant that supports science and math education.

The award is co-sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and College Board. EHS received the award because its students perform exceptionally well in AP classes and because of the school’s commitment to students and leadership in AP participation and performance. “In a pool of extremely strong applicants from Minnesota, Edina’s commitment to providing its students opportunities to explore the AP program and its staff’s dedication to student success are evident,” said Diane Tsukami, director of the national recognition and scholarships programs for College Board.

The Siemens Foundation also awards high school AP math and science teachers and up to 100 students nationwide who perform the highest on math and science AP tests. EHS senior Michael Cherkassky was recognized as a student state winner of the 2008-09 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Cherkassky is one of two students representing Minnesota.

“The high school’s AP program is continuing to define excellence,” said EHS Principal Bruce Locklear. “Every year our students enter college way ahead of the game.”
