Media Center Volunteers

Media Center Volunteers are energetic, self-motivated, organized parents who volunteer to help in the Media Center. They should be patient, flexible, and willing to learn. A working knowledge of teenage slang is a plus (What is the difference between "hip hop" and "rap"?)--ability to link sentences with the conjunction,"like",--the ability to envision warm sand and clear cooling waters while escaping to an emotional "happy space" when badgered by rowdy eighth grade boys, a necessity! Computer experience is appreaciated but not required.

Media Volunteers are asked to work two mornings or afternoons per month. The Media Center staff offers training sessions throughout the school year. Any parent interested in becoming a Media Volunteer, or wanting additional information should
email Kari Baumbach

We have created an interactive wiki for our volunteers, additional information and a calendar of your volunteers hours are available here. ReadingRecipes

“Parents Read Young Adult Books, Too” Book Club!

Young adult literature is a buzz these days. Have you noticed the amount of precious shelf space given to Y.A. titles in your local bookstore? It’s booming. And the line between what’s considered adult and what’s considered young adult is gray. Titles easily jump back and forth between the two lists. The books are sophisticated. Young adults are a tough audience with a myriad of things competing for their attention.

A growing group of curious middle school parents are gathering to talk about it, with the authors! Because parents have a few things competing for their time too, the group meets once every two months. This is a book group that connects parents to literature, authors, their child’s school and parents from both Valley View and South View middle schools. Join us. Make connections, have titles to recommend to your kids and help encourage a lifelong love of reading.
