French Language Arts K-5

Mission and Beliefs

We believe that literacy is the fundamental academic asset. The mission of French Language Arts education in the Edina Public Schools is to develop literate, life-long learners who read, write, speak, and listen effectively in French by engaging in rigorous, relevant curricula, with an emphasis on francophone cultures.

Goals

Starting with the "linguistic bath" of Kindergarten, the goals of the French Language Arts curriculum are:

  • to achieve functional communicative competency in French
  • to enjoy and take pride in communicating in French

Curriculum Information

The French Language Arts curriculum parallels the comprehensive and standards based English Language Arts curriculum. French Language Arts instruction is also integrated in all the content areas.

In French Language Arts, immersion teachers use a balanced approach to literacy, including aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum includes direct instruction in skills and strategies, through whole class and flexible group formats. Teachers use a variety of assessments to inform instruction and provide feedback to students and families.

In addition, the French Language Arts curriculum reflects the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning, which address the five areas of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

Additional information about immersion is also available through the Normandale Elementary School website.
