Elementary Overview

Edina has six elementary schools, five of which are neighborhood schools. At the elementary level, the district offers three program options for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5.

  • Kindergarten Plus (K Plus)
  • Continuous Progress (CP)
  • French Immersion

For more information about which schools offer these options, consult the Program Options web page.

Accreditation

All six elementary schools are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Registration

All children new to Edina Public Schools must register at the Welcome Center located at room 171 in the Edina Community Center, 5701 Normandale Road. Children whose fifth birthday occurs on or before September 1 are eligible for entrance into kindergarten. Contact Edan Paar, 952-848-4803.

Early Childhood Screening

Edina Public Schools offers free early childhood health and developmental screening for children who will be three to five years old by September 1, and who have not previously been screened. Screening is required for entry into kindergarten. Contact Kathryn Hagen, Coordinator, 952-848-4223.

Progress Reports

Report cards are given to parents at each school. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled several times during the year. Parents may request conferences at any time during the school year.

Staff

The elementary staff is highly qualified and well educated. Sixty-eight percent of the full-time teachers, media specialists, counselors, psychologists and nurses are at or above a master's degree training level. Specialists in art, music, physical education, Spanish and media enhance classroom learning.

Volunteers

Edina parents and community members are active in the schools. Parents serve with staff on site councils governing each school. They volunteer in after-school activities, art and music masterpiece programs, newsletters and publications, clerical work, field trips, library work, new family hospitality, classroom support and curriculum presentations. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact your school.

Parent Organizations

The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) are parent sponsored and funded organizations providing information to parents, supporting the needs of the teachers, and enhancing the student education. More information is available on the district's PTA/PTO web page.

Educational Services

The following services are available to elementary students: Gifted Education Services, Health Services, Psychologists, Social Workers, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Special Education Services (including Adaptive P.E., Assistive Technology, Autism, Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy and Deaf/Hard of Hearing).
