TIES EXPECTIONAL TEACHER
Mark Carlson - Valley View Middle School
Ninth-grade mathematics teacher Mark Carlson began flipping his instruction in the spring of 2009. Creating screencasts of his lessons, he embedded the videos into Moodle for easier student access. Always working to improve his practice, Carlson added formative assessment to the videos last year via Moodle quizzes as a way to gauge student understanding and plan instruction for the following day. Using LaTeX, he has written questions for each section, and students have access to the video if they need to review while taking the formative assessment. Carlson has now has embedded three levels of differentiated, standards-based instruction into his daily teaching. He notes that with this pedagogy, students are achieving at a much higher level and he has a better understanding of what students know and what they don’t. He is one of the big reasons why Edina is recognized for excellence in mathematics instruction.

Service Squad makes hats and mittens
Valley View Service Squad, under the direction/supervision of Ms. Barb Flooding, VVMS Orchestra Director, made hats and mittens for needy students this winter. Each morning, students met in Ms. Flooding’s room to knit the hats and mittens. Great job students and Mrs. Flooding!

Congratulations to the Valley View Middle School Freshman Cavaliers—the ninth grade men’s choir—for their performance at the 35th Annual Fall Conference of the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota. Each year, the conference program includes ten to twelve ensembles representing all levels from elementary school to professional choirs. A panel of conductors selects the choirs from a pool of applicants after hearing two years’ worth of submitted audition recordings from each group. The Cavaliers performed on Friday, November 18 at 2:00pm on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, and they worked with clinician, Dr. Judy Bowers, Professor of Choral Music Education at The Florida State University.
